We just addressed this issue at my workplace. I was a member of the ethics committee on the "new media" subcommittee.

We said employees should get approval from a supervisor for all blogs -- Work related or personal. Employees who are not permitted to write opinion about their beats in the newspaper should not write opinion about their coverage area online. If an employee wants to write opinion on a subject not related to his or her coverage area (say, the political writer wants a dog training blog) they just need authorization from a supervisor.

We went one step further and said that employees not permitted to write their opinions about their coverage areas in the newspaper should not write their opinions on that subject in comments on our site or any other site.
