Blog etiquette

It may be obvious, but it’s apparently worth repeating. It’s okay to quote someone else’s writings on your blog, but not to appropriate them. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle spells it out this way, after reminding readers that what’s on their site is protected by copyright law:

It’s not considered polite to paste the entire story on your blog. Most blogs post a summary or the first paragraph,( 40 words) then post a link to the rest of the story. That helps increase click-throughs for everyone, and minimizes copyright issues. So please keep posting, but not the entire article.

It’s a clearly stated reminder and it’s not threatening. I also like the fact that the paper not only says what it thinks is appropriate but also explains why–something most news organizations don’t do nearly often enough.
