New student reporting contest

IRE (Investigative Reporters and Editors) is launching a new contest for students in the category of computer-assisted reporting.  Entries will be judged based on “innovation, application of database and other computer-assisted skills to investigative work, the use of social science methods, and/or the applicability of the tool to investigative reporting.”

Entries can include:

• Investigative stories published in any medium.

• News applications.

• Tools to help investigative reporting.

• Published interactive features that help readers with issues of public importance or that are part of an investigative or accountability package.

Entries must be received by January 15. Four winners will get free registration to IRE’s Computer-Assisted Reporting Conference on Feb. 24-27 in Raleigh, N.C.; three nights of lodging at the conference hotel; and a slot on a panel to discuss their work.
